Neuro-Ophthalmology
Neuro-ophthalmology deals with visual problems arising from the optic nerve, the visual pathways of the brain, and the control of eye movements. These conditions sit at the boundary between ophthalmology and neurology and require particular expertise to diagnose accurately.
Assessment combines a detailed clinical examination with targeted investigations, coordinated where needed with neurologists, paediatricians and radiologists.

- Optic nerve disorders
- Evaluation of optic neuritis, optic atrophy and congenital optic nerve anomalies, in children and adults.
- Papilloedema and swollen optic discs
- Urgent, structured assessment to distinguish true papilloedema from benign appearances that mimic it.
- Double vision
- Diagnosis and management of cranial nerve palsies and other causes of double vision, including prism correction and surgery where appropriate.
- Nystagmus
- Assessment of involuntary eye movements in babies, children and adults, establishing the cause and its effect on vision.
- Unexplained visual loss
- Systematic work-up when vision is reduced and routine examination has not found the cause.
