Your Visit

What to expect

A first eye appointment — especially for a child — goes best when you know what to expect. Consultations are unhurried, and every finding is explained clearly before any decision is made.

Before your appointment

Please bring any current glasses, a list of medications, and any previous eye reports or hospital letters you have. For children, a favourite toy or comforter is always welcome.

If your child wears glasses, they should wear them to the appointment. There is no need to stop patching beforehand unless specifically advised.

During the consultation

A first consultation typically lasts 45–60 minutes. It includes an assessment of vision appropriate to your child's age, an examination of eye alignment and movements, and a detailed examination of the health of the eyes.

Most children need dilating eye drops so the back of the eye can be examined and an accurate glasses measurement taken. The drops sting for a few seconds and blur near vision for a few hours — children should not do close schoolwork immediately afterwards, and adults should not drive until the blur settles.

After your visit

You will receive a clear explanation of the findings at the end of the appointment, followed by a written report. With your consent, a copy is sent to your GP or referring clinician.

If treatment is recommended — glasses, patching, or surgery — the options, benefits and timescales are discussed with you before anything is arranged.
