Paediatric Ophthalmology

Children's eyes are still developing, and many conditions can only be treated effectively if they are found early. A consultant-led assessment establishes exactly how each eye is seeing and developing, using child-friendly techniques appropriate to every age — including babies and non-verbal children.

Every consultation includes a full assessment of vision, eye alignment and eye health, with a clear explanation of the findings and a treatment plan agreed together with you.

Conditions treated

Amblyopia (lazy eye)
Reduced vision in one or both eyes caused by abnormal visual development. Detected early, amblyopia usually responds well to glasses and patching or drop therapy.
Childhood refractive error
Assessment of whether a child needs glasses, using cycloplegic (eye-drop) refraction for an accurate prescription at any age.
Watery eyes in babies
Usually caused by a blocked tear duct (nasolacrimal duct obstruction). Most cases resolve with simple measures; persistent cases may benefit from a minor probing procedure.
Paediatric cataract
Clouding of the lens in childhood requires prompt specialist assessment, as timely treatment is critical for visual development.
Allergic eye disease
Itchy, red and watery eyes are common in children and very treatable once the underlying allergy is properly characterised.
Visual development concerns
Assessment of babies and children where parents, health visitors or paediatricians have concerns about how vision is developing.
