Strabismus (Squint)
A squint (strabismus) is a misalignment of the eyes. In children it can affect visual development and depth perception; in adults it may cause double vision or affect confidence. Both deserve careful specialist assessment.
Treatment is tailored to the cause: many squints are managed with glasses, prisms or patching alone, while others benefit from surgery to realign the eyes. Surgical and non-surgical options — and honest advice about each — are discussed at consultation.
Conditions treated
- Childhood squint assessment
- Full orthoptic and ophthalmic evaluation to establish the type and cause of the squint and its effect on visual development.
- Non-surgical management
- Glasses, prisms, patching and monitoring — many squints are fully managed without an operation.
- Squint surgery
- Adjusting the position of the eye muscles to realign the eyes, performed as a day-case procedure under general anaesthetic in children.
- Adult strabismus and double vision
- Assessment and treatment of new or long-standing squint in adults, including realignment surgery and prism management of double vision.
